Real-life example: Community service

Making a significant difference in the community is important to our people and we encourage them to donate their time to organisations that they’re passionate about. To support them with this, Rest offers employees two days of community service leave each year as well as a range of flexible work options.

One of our employees, Pat, has been working with Ronald McDonald House Randwick for a little over a year. During this time, he’s helped the charity provide a home away from home for seriously ill children and their families.

We asked Pat a few questions about his involvement and what it means to him.

Text Box: What attracted you to work with Ronald McDonald House?

The McDonalds store owners themselves, especially the Canberra people. It’s an incredible business community they’ve created there and the enthusiasm and passion they support the house with is infectious. They invited me in to the facility and I got to see the impact it has, the teams that operate the houses and the support from the broader community. After that it was an easy decision to get involved.

What does your involvement include?

I do the overnight shift so I’ll get in between 8-9pm and leave 8am the following morning. There’s a few chores like taking out rubbish, stacking dishwashers and making sure nothing is left on overnight. For the most part you just spend time in the family room and make sure you’ve got the emergency mobile phone on you. Occasionally families arrive late, lock themselves out or come in after an emergency. You have to be there to welcome them and show them to a room.

What does it mean to you to help sick kids and their families?

It’s just nice to do what you can when you can. I won’t always be able to pitch in either due to my location or family circumstances. So I do it now while I can.

Has Rest supported you with this and if so, how?

Rest is a major supporter of Ronald McDonald House so they’ve been really understanding about the work I do with the Charity. I’m able to adjust my work hours when I need to, and take a full day out of work each year to attend the Charity’s events or training. They've also helped me to raise funds in support of the Sydney and Canberra Gala fundraisers for a number of years now.
